If you’re not quite sure what it is yet, then you’re about to fall in love with the Reason music software. Creation of the Swedish “gods of sound” that are the company Propellerheads.

The main function of Reason is to take all the expensive racks that you find in a traditional recording studio and pack them all into one inexpensive piece of recording software.

This sounds like an impossible task but they have actually achieved it!

You can also mix and match all the modules using the virtual connection cables which come as standard as part of the software. You have to see this to believe it!

Since it’s release in November 2000, Reason has gone through many changes and new features have constantly improved the user experience.

You can control the sounds using a simple controller keyboard and audio can then be added using an audio recording program like Garageband or Pro Tools.

To get Reason up and running you need a hardware interface as I mentioned earlier, which will allow your computer to recognize the keyboard and then you’re good to go.

In this article I’m going to show you the method I use to make Techno music, and talk to you about my Techno music maker of choice.

The first thing to realize is that making Techno music is about feel.

You need to be a fan and have listened to hundreds of records to really know how to build a great climax.

First off…

My own personal Techno music maker is a copy of Reason and my trusty m-audio controller keyboard.

This simple set up allows me to test out hundreds of sounds and get things rocking quick.

Dummies Techno Music Maker Guide

Phase 1

You want to sit down with your keyboard and mess about with lots of sounds, what you are looking for is something that sounds really epic and will be the main backbone of your song.

Too many people just start with a beat, but your are never going to have any commercial success that way because people need something to remember.

Phase 2

Now start with the bass drum and decide on your tempo, I like to use around 140bpm.

The bass drum needs to be a good sound because this is the heart of the music.

Note* Don’t worry if your no good at keyboard, the beauty of Reason is that you can build up your tracks bit by bit.

Add tambourine to give speed to the track.

Hi hat is very important, usually on the off beat.

Bass lines – most of the time I will use an old school synth tone.

Break loop – This will give groove to your bass drum.

Additional melody – should be a nice mix with the main hook you worked out earlier.

Equalize the sound – you might want to add a little bit of top end or even kill all the bass in one part of the song and fade it back in for the climax.

Tweak all the different sounds on a keyword – make sure you tweak your keyboard patch to get the best sound.

Final thoughts.

Techno music makers are so good these days that you can have your whole set up on a mac pro and make music anywhere you like without a studio.

You always have too much in a track to start with, so add loads of tracks then find the five or six sounds that work best and subtract everything else

Composition is still important in Techno, people want songs not just noise.

Once your tack is compete take it to a club and blast it out on the massive speakers.

You want to look at the crowd responses and see if there is anything you might improve.

Free R&B Beats – Top 5 Tips

If you’re going the free route here are my top 5 tips….

Google

First of all you want to go onto google and search “free beats”. This might sound obvious but the best beat websites are changing all the time and you want to make sure you’re using the very best stuff.

Copyright

Once you find some free r&b beats that you like it’s time to look for the legal stuff. You need to make sure that you have permission to use the beat wherever you like, without paying a fee.

If you can’t find this information don’t use the beats in your track because they’re probably stolen.

Sample Rate

Next you want to make sure that the free r&b beats you’re using are very high quality because if you base your whole track on something that is week your mix will sound muddy.

You should be using above 128kbp

Editing

So with all that out the way it’s time to cut your beats front and back and make them fit in the tempo of your song with time stretch.

Don’t overdo it here because too much stretching or squeezing will distort your beat. If the beat is not near the right tempo find a new one.

Mixing beats

Often when you buy a beat pack you will get a whole load of stuff in the same style, and all recorded on the same drum kit which makes it really easy to mix them.

The problem with free beats is that the choice will often be quite limited, so you want to make sure everything sounds as similar as possible.

Without doubt the best music mixer software I have used comes free on a mac and you have probably heard of the program called garageband.

The bad old days…

When I first started to make music on a computer I got myself a whole bunch of stuff for the studio…

• Big mixing board
• 23 leads
• Mac G5
• 10 Mics

This all sounds great but it set me back around $5000

And when I got it all home and finally had it set up and sort of working, it was so complicated to use that rather than feeling inspired I just felt stressed every time I looked at it.

Pointless right?

Well a year ago I sold all that gear and got myself a new Mac Book with the the idea to get a light version of Pro Tools and an Mbox.

But when I opened it up and started messing with Garageband I have to say that I was amazed.

You have to keep an open mind here because most people will tell you that it’s far too simple to make any really music. But for me that’s the whole point.

It’s super simple and that makes recording fun and easy… and much less of a hassle because everything is right there and ready to go.

Now my studio is a whole lot simpler and I just have the following stuff in there….

• 4 leads
• Guitar

That’s it…

It works perfectly all the time, and I don’t have to worry about buying new gear every year.

In this post I want to take to you about my experience with the Roland Drum Machine and a warning to people who want to have a easy way to great beats.

A couple of years back my drummer came to rehearsal one day and said that he had to leave the band because he was going to university.

Dough!

It’s was a massive blow because he was like a brother to us, and he was also a really amazing and aggressive drummer.

What to do?

We bummed around for a while trying to think about finding a replacement…

But we had a problem….

What if we spend another year getting all the songs right with a new guy and then he leaves as well?

It was a scary thought…and that was the moment I made my first research into the Roland drum machine.

I looked around for ages and decided on the DR Rhythm 770, which is usually used for electronic music.

At that time I did not make any rap or dance stuff, so I just wanted to recreated what our drummer had played on the album.

The Roland Drum Machine was hard to use!

I guess if you’re a computer buff you would get your head around it in a few days, but for me it was mind bending.

How does a Roland drum machine work? I hear you ask…

1. You create a set of beats that will go into your songs and then choose your drum sound.
2. Next you go into song creation mode and put all the beat together.

The main problems I found were creating fills that sounded cool and also changing the tempo of the songs half way through. (Which happens in most of our music.)

It took me about six months solid work and I soon found that I had used up all the memory on the Roland drum machine I started on.

But it was done…

…and I had replaced my drummer with a machine that could never moan, or be late, or argue about what kind of beer we should drink…

Loads of work but a massive stress killer!

Final thoughts.

To be honest I was a little stupid to go ahead and buy the Roland drum machine without thinking about it harder.

They have some great drum sounds in there but really it’s made for people making dance music.

After about a year I moved onto a mac book and started making my beats using samples and editing in Pro Tools.

This gave me much more editing possibilities and a more natural sound.

If you can afford it, skip the Roland drum machine and go for a software instrument like Sonic Producer.
